  • The Primary Science Safety Audit 2026 for primary schools is now available.

    Headteacher Key Actions

Headteachers are asked to ensure that:

    • The Primary Science Safety Audit 2026 is completed in partnership with the science subject leader as part of the school’s Health & Safety and safeguarding arrangements.
    • Actions from the previous year’s audit are reviewed, evaluated for impact, and either signed off as completed or appropriately carried forward.
    • The revised guidance Safety in Science at Key Stages 1 and 2 (Fifth Edition, June 2025) is reviewed and embedded, ensuring practical activities take place in safe, risk‑assessed and well‑managed learning environments.
    • Risk assessments and control measures relating to science (including equipment, materials, supervision and staff competence) are current, proportionate and effective.
    • All staff who teach science have access to CLEAPSS guidance, and that CLEAPSS logins are in place to support safe and informed practice.
    • Any identified risks, gaps or areas for development are captured clearly in the science safety action plan, with actions, timescales and accountability.
    • The audit is quality assured and formally signed off, reflecting senior leadership responsibility for safeguarding and Health & Safety governance.
    • The completed audit is submitted by the stated deadline: 22 June 2026
    • The returned flowback Word document is retained as safeguarding and Health & Safety evidence, with copies held centrally and by the school’s Health & Safety Officer.

    Please note:

    • Completion is mandatory for Hampshire maintained schools.
    • Please see Primary Science Safety Audit Guidance 2026 document below to support you with preparation for completing the audit.
    • A small number of schools will receive Autumn term monitoring visits.
    • Failure to submit the audit may result in a formal Health & Safety monitoring visit in the following academic year.
