Secondary Health and Science Audit
Section outline
-
The health and safety audit for secondary schools is now available. Based on feedback from schools we have further simplified the process. The audit, action plan and CLEAPPS links are all available in the file.
The Headteacher should complete the audit along with the Head of Science or equivalent. Any areas identified as requiring improvement will be added to an action plan tab. The Head of Science and Technician must identify any actions that need to be taken before sign off and submission by BOTH the head teacher and head of science.
Please note that the completion of this audit is compulsory for Hampshire maintained schools. A small number of randomly selected schools will receive a monitoring visit in the Autumn term, and failure to submit the audit could result in a formal Health and Safety monitoring visit in the new academic year.
This is not compulsory for non-maintained schools, but filling it in and returning will help build a bigger picture of the issues surrounding safe and effective practical work in Science across Hampshire, and we would appreciate your support with this.
Please read the information at the start of the audit carefully.
You should print and save a copy of your response. A copy should be kept by Head of Science/Senior Technician or Science Coordinator and another copy lodged with the school’s Health and Safety Officer.
Your response also needs to be returned to HIAS Secondary Science support officer Caroline Garfirth caroline.garfirth@hants.gov.uk by Friday 27 June 2025.
We have also included the blank HCC risk assessment form which should now be used when carrying out your Lab risk assessments. These should be done every three years or if any lab has been refurbished or a new one built.
